Dulaney was loaded this fall, but it was senior Eric Walz who led the Lions to the program's sixth state title.
Dulaney started out strong but suffered a close loss to rival Severna Park at the Bull Run Invitational at Hereford in late September. Walz said later that the defeat made the Lions refocus and realize they had to work harder to reach their goal of a state title.
They didn't lose another race, kept improving and rolled over all comers. Dulaney swept the Baltimore County, Class 4A North region and state titles, with Walz winning each race and setting the tone.
He was the first Dulaney boy to win a state title in 53 years and won a number of big races this season. But Walz seemed more proud of the team title — and the way the Lions adjusted midseason — than anything
"It made us re-evaluate what we were doing," Walz said at the state meet. "We realized we weren't untouchable yet."
