Boys Athlete of the Week: Jes Stephens, McDonogh, swimming

The senior led his team to a rare victory over Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference rival Loyola by swimming personal-best times in four events. He won the 50-yard freestyle (21.63 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (47.25) and swam the anchor legs in the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.25) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.39). That contributed to the team's 105-65 win, its first over Loyola since 2006 and only the Eagles' second over the Dons since 1968. McDonogh (4-1) also remained perfect in the conference. Stephens, who is also a co-captain on the Eagles' golf team, has already qualified for the Olympic trials in the 100-meter freestyle. He will attend Purdue next year on a full swimming scholarship.

Others considered: Garrett Burkhead, Patterson Mill, basketball; Daquan Cook, St. Frances, basketball; Myles Martin, McDonogh, wrestling; Brandon Spain, Glen Burnie, basketball.
