Boy Athlete of the Week (Dec. 23): Lawrence Cager, Calvert Hall, indoor track

Calvert Hall high jumper Lawrence Cager is the Boy Athlete of the Week. (Algerina Perna, Baltimore Sun)

In Friday's Maryland Intercholastic Athletic Association meet, Cager set a new indoor league record in the high jump when he cleared 6 feet, 9 inches at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Cager, also a standout wide receiver for the Cardinals football team, earned All-Metro first-team honors in both indoor and outdoor track and field last season. In the indoor season, he won the MIAA title in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and also claimed the event in the outdoor season (6 feet, 8 inches). Football is Cager's top sport, and the All-Metro second-team pick is still weighing a number of offers from many of the top Division I programs. He will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, representing the East squad Jan. 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Others considered: Gary Blackston, Patterson, basketball; Myles Martin, McDonogh, wrestling; Elijah Wood, John Carroll, basketball
