The junior wide receiver and cornerback scored four touchdowns, three on receptions and one after a fumble recovery, to spark No. 2 Franklin to its second straight Class 3A football state championship, 35-21, over Damascus Thursday. The Indians (13-1) trailed 21-0 when Smothers, a speedy 5-feet-9, 160 pounds, leaped between two defenders in the end zone to grab a perfect 30-yard pass from quarterback Jacquez Adams with 30 seconds left in the first half. He also caught touchdown passes of 47 and 12 yards and had 122 yards receiving on six catches. That boosted his season totals to 38 catches for 696 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 1,440 all-purpose yards and 22 total touchdowns. Smothers, an All-Metro first-team receiver last season, has offers from many top Football Bowl Subdivision programs, including West Virginia, Ohio State, Penn State and Georgia.
