Boys Athlete of the Week: Tyler Silberberg, Wilde Lake, golf

The junior shot two rounds of 71 and came from behind in the final round to win his first state boys golf championship last week at the University of Maryland course. Silberberg, who finished 11th in last year's state tournament, began the second day of competition two strokes off the lead and double-bogeyed the first hole to fall four strokes behind. He birdied the second hole and made four more birdies to defeat North Point's Marcus Byrd by three strokes. The Howard County champion is only the second player in county history to record a season average of below par. Last summer, he finished second in the Maryland State Junior Amateur. He has a 4.18 GPA and wants to play professional golf after college. Silberberg, whose home course is Hobbits Glen, is in a mentorship program this fall at Fairway Hills Golf Course.

Others considered: Brandon Cherry, Boys' Latin, football; Kevin Corbusier, Loyola, cross country; Mike Distler, Loyola, soccer; Eric Latham, Perry Hall, football; Thomas Stuart, Calvert Hall, football; Ryan Umpleby, Fallston, football; Michael Wegner, Loyola, cross country.
