Varsity roundup: No. 3 John Carroll boys hoops wins N.C. tournament in final seconds

Two Maryland teams battled for the title at the Hoodies House Hoop Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday.

Elijah Long made two free throws with three seconds left in the game to lift No. 3 John Carroll over St. James, 41-39, on Tuesday.

Most Valuable Player Kimbal Mackenzie had 15 points for the Patriots (14-1). Virginia Tech-bound Justin Robinson scored 14 points for the Saints, who led for most of the game.

South Carroll 41, No. 11 Centennial 38: Despite losing a 13-point second-quarter advantage, the Cavaliers (6-2) held off a late charge by the Eagles (8-1) to claim the Liberty Holiday tournament crown in Eldersburg.

"It's a good experience, win or lose," South Carroll coach Doug Goff said. "If they had hit that 3[-pointer], or we would have lost at the buzzer, I still would have felt the same, that holiday tournaments are a real good experience for us."

Logan Cook added nine points Tuesday and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

No. 10 St. Vincent Pallotti 62, Gilman 51: Harlyn Owens scored 15 points to lead the Panthers (12-2) past the host Greyhounds (6-8) in the championship of the Sherm Bristow Holiday Tournament.

Ben Franklin 49, Indian River (Va.) 39: Darius Miller had 14 points and Tyheem Potillo had 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bayhawks (6-3) past the Braves in the championship of the Governor's Cup Challenge in Wicomico.

No. 1 Roland Park 78, Stephenson (Ga.) 66: The Reds (10-2) used a quick pace and a 24-19 fourth quarter to top the Jaguars, a Class 5A powerhouse, and win the Dolphin Division of the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, S.C.

MVP Lindsey Edwards of Roland Park and Davion Wingate of Stephenson tied for the most points in the game (27).

No. 4 Milford Mill 69, Leonardtown 14: Dionna White and McKenzie Pollard each scored 16 points to carry the host Millers (7-0) past the Raiders at their Lady Millers Tournament.

No. 7 Patterson Mill 69, Holy Trinity (N.Y.) 14: Qalea Ismail scored 25 points to power the Huskies (6-2) past the Titans at the BBOWS Holly & Hoops Tournament at Notre Dame Prep.

Catonsville 48, Walkersville 42: Renee Gast scored 13 points and the Comets (6-2) won the first Governor's Cup Challenge for girls in Wicomico.
