Charlie Thomas broke a River Hill school record Monday with 46 points to lead the way for the Hawks in an 82-50 victory over Hammond.

His night, which included 37 second-half points to help River Hill break open what was a 26-22 game at the half, breaks the mark set by Tommy Brenton, who scored 44 points in a game in 2007.

"I saw that we were only up by a few and I knew that I needed to step up if we wanted to win," Thomas said. "My teammates kept feeding me in the post and I just kept going. I've never been that hot before, but I give a lot of credit to my teammates for getting me the ball in spots where I could score."

After suffering through a recent four-game losing streak, the Hawks have won two straight games — against Cardozo on Saturday, then Hammond on Monday.

"We started off the season kind of rough, but I think that win over Cardozo and this win tonight has given us some more confidence as we go into break. I think we're ready to move forward now," Thomas said.

Glen Burnie had a chance to tie or win the game with 6.6 seconds left in the extra period but missed a pair of missed free throws.

"It was just an all-out team effort," said Arundel's Will O'Hara, who finished with a game-high 20 points. "The whole team just played really well. We all, collectively, played well together."

Except for O'Hara, the scoring was relatively equal, with Victor Mack adding nine points, while Nick Holland and Christian Thornton each chipped in eight. Gabe Smith also tallied seven points for Arundel, now 3-3.

Century 50, South Carroll 47: In tight situations with the game still to be decided, Knights coach George Wunder said he's happy with Kevin Steadman stepping up to the free-throw line.

On Monday night on the road against the Cavaliers, the senior found himself in such a position.

In the final minute of play, with his squad clinging to a slim lead, Steadman went to the stripe on three separate occasions and hit five of his six attempts.

Though both coach and player stated that the team could have performed better from the line all night, those shots proved to be crucial, as Century escaped.

Steadman scored a team-high 21 points, only matched by South Carroll's Logan Clark.

The Knights improve to 5-1 overall, 2-1 in county play. The Cavaliers fall to 4-2, 2-1.

South Carroll 32, Century 20: The Cavaliers (6-3, 3-0 Carroll County) relied on Keriann McTavish's scoring ability on offense, aggressive rebounding and tight defense to hand the Knights (5-1, 2-1) their first loss of the season.

"Our offense was struggling all throughout the game, we weren't finishing shots," McTavish said. "When we would go down on defense, that's when we secured the win."
