Winter sports roundup: Mt. St. Joseph outlasts Bullis, 78-66

Top-ranked Mount St. Joseph basketball faced a determined Bullis School in the semifinals of the Gonzaga D.C. Classic on Saturday night.

The Gaels and the Bulldogs traded leads throughout the first three quarters until St. Joe pulled away in the fourth quarter, winning, 78-66.


The Gaels (7-1) will face Sidwell Friends (6-0), an 82-71 winner over the host Eagles, in tonight's championship game at George Washington at 6:45.

Ohio State-bound Kameron Williams came up big again, scoring 28 points. Bullis led 40-35 at the break, but Mount St. Joe extended the lead to nine with 4:22 left in the game and the Bulldogs (3-1) never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Forest Park 82, Spingarn (D.C.) 60: Rysheed Corbin scored 24 points and the Foresters (3-0) beat the Green Wave at the Baltimore-D.C. Challenge at Calvin Coolidge (D.C.).

Forest Park used a pressure defense to force turnovers and take a 31-9 lead after the first quarter. The Foresters never looked back.

Girls basketball

Forest Park (Va.) 58, No. 11 Roland Park 53: Virginia-bound Breyana Mason scored a game-high 29 points and the Bruins went 23-for-28 from the foul line to beat the Reds at the Beast of the East Tournament at St.Frances.


No. 3 River Hill 70, Northeast 8: The Hawks improved to 2-0 as River Hill lost only two matches. The Eagles' Jeremy Morrow (120) pinned Ryan Erskine in 4minutes, 16 seconds and Nick McCauley (heavyweight) earned a 2-1 decision over Eselebor Okojie.

River Hill collected 10 pins.

No. 7 Owings Mills wins at Parkville Tournament: The Eagles (1-0) captured the championship of the Knightmare Invitational at Parkville with a score of 205.5. Manchester Valley took second with 191, and Loyola came in third at 176.

The three outstanding wrestlers of the tournament were Owen Rill (North Carroll), Demetrius Johnson (Owings Mills) and Conan Schuster (Loyola).
