Archbishop Spalding tops Gilman, 76-58, in high school football

No. 3 Archbishop Spalding and host Gilman combined to score 134 points in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference football Saturday.

Jayden Umbarger led the way throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for three touchdowns as the Cavaliers (4-3, 2-2 MIAA) outlasted the Greyhounds, 76-58.

Umbarger went 12-for-20 for 213 yards and had 22 carries for 189 yards. Greyhounds quarterback Purnell Hill went 19-for-31 for 302 yards and a touchdown pass and he had 15 carries for 136 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Gilman (3-5, 2-2) took the first lead on a touchdown pass from Hill to Piper Bond with 8:01 left in the first quarter. The game would be tied four times before Spalding scored three-in-a-row spanning both halves to take a 49-36 lead.

Julius Chestnut had an 11-yard touchdown run. Umbarger threw two touchdown passes to Brevin Easton (14 yards) and Larry Brown (48 yards) during the Cavaliers scoring run.

Gilman came within 49-43 with 2:10 left in the third quarter before Umbaarger ran for a touchdown and threw his fourth touchdown pass to Jake Brady for a 62-53 lead with 6:54 left in the game.
