Varsity roundup (Oct. 11): Stitz scores twice in Curley's soccer triumph

No. 1 Archbishop Curley 3, No. 8 Loyola Blakefield 1: Senior forward Ben Stitz scored two goals and senior midfielder Chris Mirabile added two assists as the Friars (14-1-1, 11-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) claimed a key road win.


Curley has 33 points in the standings and is tied for first place with No. 2 McDonogh (14-2, 11-2), but the Friars have one loss fewer than the Eagles. The Dons, whose six-game winning streak ended, are 9-5-1 overall and in fourth place in the MIAA A with a 6-5 mark for 18 points.

No. 4 C. Milton Wright 2, Fallston 0: Ryan Miller made four saves in his sixth shutout as the visiting Mustangs (8-0-2) beat the Cougars (6-4). Conner Appleby and Brett Lindsey each scored for C. Milton Wright.

No. 13 Bel Air 4, Elkton 0: Connor Lorenz had two goals and an assist to lead the Bobcats (8-2) past the host Golden Elks (3-7).

Severn 8, Saints Peter & Paul 1: Nathan Gauthier had a hat trick to lead the host Admirals (6-9, 5-7 MIAA B Conference) past the Sabres (4-5-3, 4-5-3).

Field hockey

No. 9 Archbishop Spalding 3, No. 7 Garrison Forest 2, OT: Margot Lawn scored the game-winner six minutes into overtime as the Cavaliers (7-4, 4-4 Interscholastic Athletic Associaiton of Maryland A Conference) upset the host Grizzlies (9-4, 6-3).

Garrison Forest took a 2-0 lead in the first half before Spalding held it to no shots or goals in the second half.

Glenelg Country 3, Severn 1: Sam Wellman scored both her goals off penalty corners to lead the Dragons (5-2-1, 3-2 IAAM B Conference) past the host Admirals (7-5, 4-1).
