Varsity roundup (Oct. 6): No. 1 Spalding girls beat John Carroll, 2-0, in soccer

Maria Kiskis scored twice and host No. 1 Archbishop Spalding (8-2-2, 4-1-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) shut out John Carroll (2-6, 0-5), 2-0.

No. 2 Broadneck 2, Chesapeake-AA 0: The host Bruins (7-1-1) recorded their fourth shutout in a row. The Cougars fell to 4-5-1.

No. 12 Atholton 2, Marriotts Ridge 0: Sam Clearfield and Delaney Ensor scored to lead the visiting Raiders (8-1) past the Mustangs (2-5-3).

Michelle Money scored two goals and Leia Liberto also scored as the Severn girls soccer team won its sixth straight with a 3-1 victory over over Glenelg Country School on Thursday.

Severn 3, Glenelg Country 1: Michelle Money scored twice to lead the host Admirals (8-4-1, 7-0-1 IAAM B Conference) past the Dragons (3-3, 3-3).

Mount Hebron 3, Glenelg 0: Megan Pallozzi made four saves and the visiting Vikings (5-3) shut out the Gladiators (4-3-2).

Boys soccer

No. 7 Mount Hebron 2, Glenelg 1, OT: At the end of what coach Mike Linsenmeyer called the biggest week of the team's season so far, the Vikings delivered perhaps their most thrilling victory.

Mt. Hebron junior Trevor Namie scores golden goal off free kick to help Vikings defeat Glenelg 2-1 in overtime

Less than two minutes into the first overtime period against Glenelg on Thursday night, Trevor Namie scored on a ball flicked to him off the head of Johnny Linsenmeyer to seal a 2-1 victory and keep Mount Hebron alone in first place in the Howard County standings.

The Vikings improved to 8-1, and the Gladiators fell to 4-3.

Field hockey

No. 3 Archbishop Spalding 2, Cape Henlopen (Del.) 1: The host Cavaliers (11-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and held the Delaware state champion Vikings (4-2) scoreless until three minutes left in the game.

Margot Lawn and Hannah Bouchard scored for Spalding.

No. 8 Garrison Forest 3, Roland Park 2: Amanda Fruman scored and broke a 2-2 tie in the second half to lift the host Grizzlies (8-3, 5-2 IAAM A Conference) over the Reds (4-7-1, 1-6-1).

The win marked the second straight victory over Roland Park. Garrison Forest beat the Reds, 4-0, on Sept. 27.

It's amazing what a goal can do for a team.

No. 15 John Carroll 3, Annapolis Area Christian 1: Ashlee Kothenbeutel had a hat trick to power the Patriots (7-2, 3-0 IAAM B Conference) past the host Eagles (6-2, 2-2).

River Hill 3, Atholton 1: Gaby Hamburger had a hat trick to lift the host Hawks (8-1) over the Raiders (4-5).

Severn 2, Glenelg Country 1: The Admirals' Marah Vain-Callahan tipped in a shot from Josie Formica 10 minutes into the second half to break a tie at 1.

Severn (4-5, 3-1 IAAM B Conference) has won its past two games. The host Dragons fell to 2-3 and 1-3.

Girls volleyball

No. 2 Howard d. River Hill, 3-0: Sarah Sweet had 17 kills and Julia McKenna had 34 assists to lead the Lions (8-1) past the host Hawks (1-7).

Howard won, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22.

Arundel went into Severna Park and took the Falcons in three, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17 Thursday. The Wildcats face the Seahawks on Oct. 17 and follow with the Bruins a week later.

No. 4 Arundel d. No. 11 Severna Park, 3-0: McKenzie Meehan had seven kills and Alicia Eldredge had five kills to lift the Wildcats (8-1) over the host Seahawks (4-3).

Arundel won, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17.

No. 5 Atholton d. Marriotts Ridge, 3-0: Lisa Zoch had 16 kills and Sam Miller had 13 kills to lead the Raiders (12-4) past the host Mustangs (4-5).

Atholton won, 25-21, 25-8, 25-17.

Harford Tech d. North East, 3-1: Kerrigan Clem has six aces and six kills and the Cobras (3-5) beat the host Indians (4-5).

Harford Tech won, 17-25, 26-24, 25-9, 25-23.

Dulaney d. Franklin, 3-0: With only two starters back from last season, the Lions keep winning. They improved to 6-3 with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-20 victory over the visiting Indians (5-4).

Only two starters returned from last season.

Senior setter Sophie Sun had 11 assists and four aces for Dulaney while teammates Mykayla Milchling, a senior outside hitter, had eight digs and four kills and Kathryne Parler, a sophomore setter, finished with five kills and seven assists.
