Varsity roundup (Oct. 4): Top-ranked Curley turns back St. Paul's, 2-0, in boys soccer

No. 1 Archbishop Curley 2, St.Paul's 0: Ben Stitz had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Friars (12-1-1, 9-1-0 MIAA A Conference) past the Crusaders (1-10, 1-10).

No. 8 Mount Saint Joseph 3, John Carroll 0: Brett St. Martin had a goal and an assist and Ashton Carey made two saves in his seventh shutout of the season for the visiting Gaels (9-4, 8-3 MIAA A Conference). The Patriots fell to 2-10-1, 2-9.


No. 11 Loyola Blakefield 1, No. 12 Calvert Hall 0: Chase Llewellyn fed Alex Reid, who scored the game-winner on a first-half header, and the host Dons (7-4-1, 4-4 MIAA A Conference) beat the Cardinals (8-4, 6-4).

Friends 4, Boys' Latin 1: The host Lakers (1-8, 1-6-2 MIAA B Conference) pulled within 2-1 early in the second half before the Quakers (8-0, 8-0-1) responded with two goals over eight minutes. Friends remains the only unbeaten team in the B Conference.


Rising Sun 2, Harford Tech 1: Kenny Cargo scored the only goal for the visiting Cobras (5-3) on a penalty kick at the 39-minute mark of the first half. The Tigers improved to 5-4.

Field hockey

No. 5 C. Milton Wright 6, Patterson Mill 1: Sam Aljets had two goals and an assist and Annie Keele had one goal and two assists to lead the host Mustangs (9-1) past the Huskies (5-6).

No. 8 McDonogh 3, St. Mary's 1: Carina Wesker had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Eagles (7-2, 5-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) past the Saints (2-6-1, 0-6).

Roland Park 1, No. 9 Archbishop Spalding 0: The visiting Reds (3-6-1, 1-5-1 IAAM A Conference) scored the game-winner 23 minutes into the second half to upset the Cavaliers (6-4, 3-4).

Maryvale 4, Glenelg Country 2: Olivia Cerasoli scored twice to lead the host Lions (7-5, 5-1 IAAM B Conference) past the Dragons (3-2-1, 1-2).
