There's something about the Reif Alumni Cup that brings out the best in Calvert Hall senior forward Ben Alexander. In the 15th version of the game against rival Archbishop Curley, Alexander rose midway through the second half to head home what turned out to be the winning goal as the No. 1 Cardinals edged the No. 2 Friars, 2-1, in front of an overflow crowd at Russo Stadium. Last season, Alexander scored twice to lead Calvert Hall to a 3-1 win. That makes it two wins in a row for the Cardinals, who evened the series at 7-7-1.For the season, Calvert Hall improved to 5-1 overall and in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. Curley (6-1-1) fell to 3-1-1 in league play.Awarded a free kick in the middle of the field, senior midfielder Chris Carroll sent a ball to the left of the goal. In the middle of the pack, Alexander was able to head it over Curley goalie Nathan Wdziezkowski inside the opposite post."It's always a little extra special scoring in this game," Alexander said. "Chris put a perfect ball to the back post and I told him to find my head and it worked out. It's a lot of adrenaline, and you don't know where you are, but to see the ball go in the back of the net, there's nothing like it."The goal came with 23:28 to play and the Cardinals defense had to stay strong. The Friars had three quality scoring chances in the final six minutes with Alejandro Arbelaez sending a free kick from 30 yards just wide; a shot from Matt Brummet from 16 yards high and another inside the box from Brenden Hollingsworth also high. With the crowd yet to settle in, the home team was fast to strike when senior Brady O'Connor finished in front just 45 seconds into the game for the 1-0 lead.In the final minute of an evenly played first half, the Friars were able to equalize when Nick Balcer scored from 15 yards from the right side. Both teams came into the week with perfect records but couldn't maintain them.On Wednesday, Calvert Hall fell to Loyola Blakefield, 2-1, while the Friars tied Mount Saint Joseph, 2-2.John Carroll 2, No. 8 Loyola Blakefield 0: The visiting Dons (2-3, 2-3 MIAA A Conference) couldn't build on Wednesday's upset of No. 1 Calvert Hall. The Patriots (3-4, 3-2) used a balanced attack to score in each half.
