Friday night's football game between Archbishop Spalding and Good Counsel was a matchup between two of the top seven teams in the state, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
After the teams traded leads in the first half, Good Counsel scored the only points in the second half and defeated Archbishop Spalding, 20-14, at a packed Mike Whittles Field.
Spalding (1-1) has two more out-of-conference games before beginning Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association AConference play on Sept. 30 at Loyola Blakefield.
Spalding fought back from an early deficit to take a 14-12 lead at the half. After the Falcons went ahead in the second half, the Cavaliers had the ball in the final minutes with a chance to drive for the go-ahead score.
"I think in the end, we'll win a game later in the year because we lost this one," said Spalding coach Kyle Schmitt, on the experience of playing another of the top teams in the state. "Tomorrow morning will be a great learning opportunity for us to sit and watch it and really diagnose some of the issues."
Mohamed Ibrahim ran for 133 yards on 26 carries and scored a pair of first-half touchdowns for the Falcons, who play in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and entered the game ranked No. 2 in the state, while Spalding came in ranked No.7.
The Falcons, who have lost to DeMatha Catholic the past two years in the WCAC championship game, opened the season with a 23-21 victory over Mount Saint Joseph. They will also play Gilman of the AConference on Sept. 17.
"I think we just left it on the field," Schmitt said. "They had a couple big plays and we had some drops. The muffed punt was a huge play. We lost the field position battle in the second half."
No. 3 Broadneck 50, Northeast 0: Shane Davis completed 15 of 19 passes for 332 yards and threw four touchdown passes as the host Bruins (2-0) shut out the Eagles (1-1).
No. 15 Arundel 47, North County 31: Ryan Sedgwick threw six touchdown passes and Tim Cole scored six touchdowns to power the host Wildcats (2-0) past the Knights (0-2).
Sedgwick completed 19 of 32 passes for 256 yards.
Cole caught five touchdown passes for a total of 90 yards and had one rushing touchdown of 24 yards.
North County's Deontez Parker rushed for two touchdowns and threw his second touchdown pass of the game in a second-half rally that fell short.
Maret 20, St. Paul's 14: Garrison Burnett scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner from 3 yards out with a minute left, to lift the Frogs (1-0) over the host Crusaders (1-1).
Wake Forest-bound Coby Davis completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Keon Eady for a 7-0 Maret lead.
Havre de Grace 38, Joppatowne6: The Warriors improved to 2-0 with an easy victory over the visiting Mariners (0-2). Havre de Grace quarterback Mike Flosser ran 11 yards for the game's first score and completed a 12-yard pass to Knowledge Johnson for another touchdown.
Will Ashman returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown to open the second half, and lineman Connor Gorham fell on a fumble by teammate Jasia Stansbury for another score.
Clay Harris kicked a 31-yard field goal and was good on all five point-after attempts.
Tyler Malloy closed the scoring with a 4-yard run.

No. 10 Perry Hall 2, No. 8 C. Milton Wright 1, 2OT: Derek Staines scored on a through ball five minutes into the second overtime to lift the host Gators (2-1) over the Mustangs (2-1).
No. 9 Loyola Blakefield 2, Gilman 1: Nick Battaglia hit a right-footed shot from about 15 yards just under the crossbar with 4:21 remaining to lift the visiting Dons (1-2, 1-2 MIAA A Conference) over the Greyhounds (2-2, 1-2).
"The clock was winding down, I fought for the ball, got it and knew we needed a goal," Battaglia said.

No. 4 Notre Dame Prep d. No. 6 Mount de Sales, 3-1: Camille Kreisel went 17-for-17 serving with four aces, but the Sailors (0-1, 0-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) lost to the host Blazers (2-1, 1-0).
Notre Dame Prep won, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17.
