Varsity roundup: 3 local boys set for tennis semifinals

Three local boys advanced Friday to the semifinals of the state tennis championship in College Park.

Severna Park's Alex Cauneac will face Reservoir's Biyik Akinshemoyin in one semifinal today, while Towson's Eric Hurwitz will play Wootton's Mateo Cevallos in the other.

Cauneac advanced with two straight-set wins — 6-2, 6-1 over Dulaney's Handong Park in the first round and 6-3, 6-2 over North Hagerstown's Max Ober in the quarterfinals.

Akinshemoyin beat Magruder's Jan Lasota and J.M. Bennett's Matthew Ryan to advance to the second day, while Hurowitz won against Easton's Evan Claggett and Eleanor Roosevelt's Vijay Golla.

Other locals advancing to today's semifinals include: Centennial's Kevin Hsieh and Chase Weinberg in boys doubles; Mount Hebron's Kiran Pant and Serene Mathew and Centennial's Megan Mishra and Simone Jensen in girls doubles; Atholton's Irene Lu and Victoria Kogan in girls singles; and Fallston's Connor van Scyoc and Anna Holehouse and Winters Mill's Bryan Gieselman and Amanda Fewster in mixed doubles.

The semifinals begin at 10 a.m. today, with finals to follow at 1 p.m.


EASTON 10, CATOCTIN 0 (5 innings): The Warriors, from Talbot County, defeated the Cougars, from Frederick County, in five innings in College Park to win their fourth Class 2A state championship in the past six years.

Easton has captured seven state titles in softball since 2000, when it won the first in school history. The Warriors also have played in the title game three other times.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 9, COLONEL RICHARDSON 8 (8 innings): The Miners, from Allegany County, beat the Colonels, from Caroline County, in eight innings to win their second straight Class 1A state championship in College Park.

Mountain Ridge, which opened in 2007, beat Mardela, from Wicomico County, 4-3, to win the state championship last year.

Thursday's boys lacrosse

BALTIMORE COUNTY 12, CARROLL COUNTY 7: Brandon Nickoles (Franklin) scored four goals and Brandon Glorioso (Loch Raven) made 12 saves to lead Baltimore County over Carroll County in an All-Star game at CCBC-Essex. Ryan Akerman (Winters Mill) led Carroll County with three goals.

Thursday's girls lacrosse

CARROLL COUNTY 14, BALTIMORE COUNTY 12: Hayley Bordner (Century) notched a game-high six points on two goals and four assists at CCBC-Essex in Carroll County's All-Star game victory. Dulaney teammates Sarah Dorl and Kaeli O'Connor scored three goals apiece to pace Baltimore County.
