No. 15 Howard 6, No. 13 Westminster 5, 3 OT: Every time the No. 15 Lions play the No. 13 Owls in boys lacrosse, both teams know a berth in the Class 4A-3A North region championship game is on the line.
It's been that way in each of the past two seasons, and on Monday it was no different. Neither was the result.
Behind Tristan Kelehan's winning score 10 seconds into the third overtime on the extra-man offense, Howard beat Westminster, 6-5, in the 4A-3A North section final to end Westminster's season for the third consecutive time. Each game has been decided by one goal.
"Every time we see them it's a playoff game, so there's a lot on the line for both teams. Two programs that are high, elite teams in 4A-3A and obviously this was important. Our guys wanted this," said Howard coach Jimmy Creighton. "We just kept grinding out. We just stayed in it. We didn't play the cleanest game and we didn't shoot the way we want to shoot, but we just kept grinding and believing in each other. That's why we scored those couple of goals in the fourth quarter and tied it up. We just kept grinding."
Senior Blake Ruby scored back-to-back goals to give Westminster a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter, and it wouldn't trail again until the final goal.
The Lions will face Magruder in the 4A/3A North Region championship game Wednesday.

No. 7 Severna Park 14, No. 8 Broadneck 1: For the second time in 10 days, the No. 7 Falcons (14-2) defeated their closest Anne Arundel County rival, clinching a spot in Wednesday's Class 4A-3A East title game.
Severna Park, winners of the region's Section I, will host the Section II winner, Annapolis or South River. Broadneck finished at 14-2.
The Falcons got a goal from senior Ethan Carr on their opening possession, built an early 3-0 lead and never looked back.
Trevor Patschorke led the Falcons with five goals and an assist; Logan Spilker had two goals and two assists, and Carr scored twice. Severna Park coach David Earl praised his team's defense, rattling off name after name to confirm the cohesive effort. The fast start also played big.
"That was huge," he said. "We started off slow the last two games we played, so that had been a focus for us."
The Falcons are one win away from making their 12th state tournament appearance. Their last came in 2010, when they won the program's fifth state crown.

No. 6 Glenelg 11, No. 2 Marriotts Ridge 7: For the second straight game, the Gladiators (12-3) avenged a regular-season loss to the host Mustangs (14-2), knocking out the Howard County champions in a Class 3A-2A South Section I final.
"I'm really, really proud of them," Gladiators coach Ginger Kincaid said. "They did what we were working on and didn't lose their heads. … We were confident all the way through. I think that's the biggest thing, is that they stayed confident, patient and stuck to the game plan."
The Gladiators, who beat Mount Hebron in the previous round, started Monday's game on a 4-1 run and ended the half with an 8-3 advantage. But Marriotts Ridge scored two consecutive goals to start the second half, getting within three with more than 22 minutes to play.

Georgia Esmond (two goals), Courtney Renehan (two goals, three assists) and Alayna Pagnotta (two goals, one assist) led the Gladiators, while Lily Kennedy (two goals) and Lexi Souder (one goal, one assist) were the catalysts for the Mustangs.
