Varsity roundup (May 11): Maryvale, Mount St. Joe lead track championships

The Maryvale girls and Mount Saint Joseph boys were the leaders after the first day of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association/Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland track and field championships Wednesday at McDonogh.

The meet will finish Saturday at Calvert Hall.

No. 4 Maryvale ran away from the field, scoring 79 points to jump far ahead of defending champion McDonogh (38). Maryvale scored 24 points alone in the pole vault — won by Lonnie Garrett.

No. 2 Mount Saint Joseph is in a tighter battle on the boys side. The Gaels lead with 34 points, just in front of No. 2 Gilman (32) and Loyola Blakefield (31).

Boys lacrosse

No. 8 Broadneck 14, Meade 0: Taylor Bohannon scored seven goals and Riley McNulty had one goal and seven assists as the host Bruins (14-1) shut out the Mustangs (1-8) in a Class 4A-3A East Section I quarterfinal.

Bluford Drew Jemison 13, Patterson 3: Justin Coleman had two goals and four assists to lead the host Rockets (7-4) past the Clippers (3-7) in Class 2A-1A South Section II.

North Harford 20, Patapsco 3: Brayden Shue scored a game-high four goals to power the host Hawks (8-7) past the Patriots (1-9) in Class 3A-2A North Section II.

Havre de Grace 16, Patterson Mill 7: Kyle Barkley scored four goals and added three assists and Colin Dean had four goals and an assist to lead the host Warriors (8-7) over the Huskies (4-10), 16-7, in Class 1A North Section II.

Girls lacrosse

No. 6 Mount Hebron 9, Centennial 6: The host Vikings (12-3) used a 5-2 run in the second half to break free of the Eagles (6-9) in a Class 3A-2A South Section I quarterfinal.

Sorana Larson had four goals for Mount Hebron.
