Varsity roundup (May 8): J.P. Murphy leads Calvert Hall past Archbishop Curley in baseball


No. 7 Calvert Hall 9, No. 1 Archbishop Curley 4: J.P. Murphy (2-for-4) had a home run and four RBIs as the visiting Cardinals (17-8, 12-6 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Confernece) upset the Friars (25-4, 15-3). Winning pitcher Pete Marchineck went 42/3 innings, gave up three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four.


No. 9 Dulaney 15, Fallston 6: Jack Tarantino got the win and hit a triple to lead the host Lions (18-2) past the Cougars (8-10).

Severn 8, Friends 7, 12 innings: The host Admirals (10-9, 10-7 MIAA B Conference) scored four runs in the seventh inning to force extras and beat the Quakers (8-11, 7-11). Winning pitcher Everett Cortes went two innings, gave up two hits, walked three and struck out two.


Boys lacrosse

No. 1 McDonogh 7, No. 9 Gilman 3: Gable Braun controlled the faceoffs and Jackson Bonitz and Nathan Walsh each scored twice to lead the visiting Eagles (13-4, 9-1 MIAA A Conference) past the Greyhounds (8-8, 4-6). The victory secured the top seed for McDonogh and knocked Gilman out of the playoffs.

No. 4 Boys' Latin 12, St. Paul's 11: Matt Brandau scored his second goal and the eventual game-winner with 2:04 left in the game, and the host Lakers (12-4, 7-3 MIAA A Conference) weathered a three-goal rally to outlast the Crusaders (6-9, 4-6). The game was tied 6-6 at the half. Freshman Ben Smith had three goals for Boys' Latin.

No. 6 St. Mary's 14, Mount Saint Joseph 10: The visiting Saints (11-5, 6-4 MIAA A Conference) advance to the league playoffs, and the Gaels finish at 6-10, 1-8.

Friends 17, St. John's Catholic Prep 7: Ned Forbush scored four goals to lead the visiting Quakers (15-2, 9-1 MIAA B Conference) past the Vikings (4-13, 0-11).
