Varsity roundup (May 3): No. 4 Crusaders hold off late rally by No. 6 Admirals to earn 9-8 victory

No. 4 St. Paul's and No. 6 Severn were fighting for a lacrosse playoff spot in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. The visiting Crusaders (13-5, 5-2) went up by five goals and held off a late rally by the Admirals (13-6, 2-5) to win, 9-8, Tuesday.

St. Paul's led 9-4 in the third quarter before Severn went on a 4-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Tyler Perreten completed his hat trick with 11:14 left in the game to draw Severn within one goal. But St. Paul's defense, led by Alex Rode with 13 saves, held the Admirals scoreless the rest of the way.


"We dominated the first half. We only lost one faceoff," St. Paul's coach Rick Brocato said. "In the second half, we weren't canning our shots. But the defense stopped them in the end."

No. 3 Calvert Hall 7, St. Mary's 6: Ethan Mintzer scored four goals to lead the Cardinals (13-3, 5-2 MIAA A Conference) past the Saints (1-13, 0-7).


Gilman 10, No. 7 Mount Saint Joseph 9: Christopher Williams had four goals as the host Greyhounds (3-11, 3-4 MIAA A Conference) upset the Gaels (11-8, 2-5).

No. 8 Broadneck 12, South River 8: Taylor Bohanon and Jake Ryan each had a hat trick to lead the Bruins (13-0) past the host Seahawks (7-6).

John Carroll 20, Annapolis Area Christian 4: The host Patriots (15-6, 6-0 MIAA B Conference) extended their winning streak to eight games by beating the Eagles (3-8, 1-6).

Matthew Lowery won 11 of 12 faceoffs and Paul Diehl scored twice for John Carroll.

Girls lacrosse

No. 2 Marriotts Ridge 9, No. 7 Glenelg 7: Sarah Blalock had two goals and an assist for the host Mustangs (12-1), who held off a late rally by the Gladiators (10-3).

Marrriotts Ridge opened with a 3-0 run.

Garrison Forest 9, Annapolis Area Christian 2: Winning pitcher Madison Wilson went seven innings, gave up two runs on two hits, walked eight and struck out 17 as the Grizzlies (10-4, 10-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) beat the Eagles (4-8, 4-8).
