Ben Hienzmann made nine saves and host Mount Saint Joseph upset No. 10 Severn, 11-9, on Tuesday in boys lacrosse.
Gaels coach Stephen Berger credited his man-to-man defense for the win.
"We [locked down] their key guys and forced them into taking tough shots, shots they don't like to take," Berger said.
The Admirals (6-1, 0-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) gained momentum in the fourth quarter after a stick check against Mount Saint Joseph (7-3, 1-0). Severn went on a 6-3 run, but the rally came up short.
No. 4 Loyola Blakefield 14, No. 7 Gilman 10: The host Greyhounds (2-4) put together a 7-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead, but the Dons (4-1) finished strong, scoring four straight to win.
Nick Goles and Alex Roesner each scored four goals, and Ryan Conrad had three goals and four assists for Loyola Blakefield. Jimmy Williams led Gilman with a hat trick.
No. 5 St. Mary's 13, Archbishop Spalding 3: Timmy Hardy scored a game-high five goals and the host Saints (4-3) took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. The Cavaliers fell to 3-6.
Alex Woodall won 12 of 19 faceoffs for St. Mary's.
No. 11 Westminster 16, North Carroll 7: Hunter Davis had five goals to lead the host Owls (6-0) past the Panthers (3-2).
St. Mary's-Ryken 7, No. 15 Dulaney 5: Cameron Carter had two goals, but the visiting Lions (2-3) fell to the Knights (8-1).
Austin Short had a hat trick and Dylan Scheeler had a goal and three assists for St.Mary's-Ryken.
Severna Park 12, Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) 7: Steven Zichelli and Treavor Bellotte had three goals and an assist each to lead the host Falcons (4-2) past the Blue Streaks (0-2).
Girls lacrosse
No. 1 McDonogh 8, No. 11 John Carroll 6: The host Patriots (3-2) took a 3-0 lead and used a packed-in defense to slow the Eagles (9-0), but a 5-0 run late in the first half gave McDonogh control.
McDonogh's Olivia Jenner and John Carroll's Caroline Sdanowich each finished with a hat trick. The Eagles extended their winning streak to 121 games.
No. 4 Mount Hebron 25, Oakland Mills 1: Chachi Kelehan scored a game-high five goals to power the visiting Vikings (4-0) past the Scorpions (0-4).
Mount Hebron led 16-0 at halftime.
Baseball
No. 1 Calvert Hall 11, St. Paul's 2: The host Cardinals (9-2) trailed 1-0 after the first inning and took a 5-3 lead after the third inning.
Bradley Weber worked six inning for the win. The Crusaders fell to 4-5.
Boys' Latin 4, No. 7 St. Mary's 2: The host Lakers (7-1) scored four runs on five hits in the second inning to upset the Saints (7-2).
Skyler Morris pitched three scoreless innings to close out the win. Fordham bound Ryan Davis took the loss for St.Mary's, allowing just five hits.
Softball
No. 9 C. Milton Wright 3, No. 10 Archbishop Spalding 1: Morghan Fulton worked seven innings and gave up one run on nine hits as the Mustangs (5-1) beat the host Cavaliers (3-5).
