Varsity roundup (March 21): No. 1 Calvert Hall tops Malvern Prep, 14-9

The defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions and top-ranked Calvert Hall fell behind early, but rallied to beat Malvern Prep (Pa.), 14-9, on a rain-soaked Kelly Field Thursday night.

The host Cardinals improved to 4-1 and the Friars fell to 2-1. Malvern Prep got off to a fast start taking a 4-0 lead before Calvert Hall answered with a 4-0 run of their own. The game was tied at 5-all and 6-all before Maryland-bound Jack Sawyer scored the go-ahead goal, 7-6, and Calvert Hall never trailed again.

Midfielders Sawyer and North Carolina-bound Cole Herbert led the way for the Cardinals. Sawyer and Herbert each had three goals and three assists. Calvert Hall hosts Loyola Academy (Ill.) Sunday at noon.

No. 7 St. Paul’s 16, St. Andrew’s (Fla.) 8: The visiting Crusaders (2-1) went on a 6-0 run to break a 5-5 tie and beat the host Scots (6-3) in Boca Raton, Fla. Andrew Milani, Troy Barthelme and Logan Santos each had a hat trick for St. Paul’s.

Mount Saint Joseph 14, River Hill 11: The host Gaels (1-4) ended their losing streak and scored in double digits for the first time this season with a win over the Hawks (0-1). Mount St. Joseph will travel to Westminster Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

John Carroll 7, Northern-Calvert 5: Tyler Smith had a hat trick and Jordan Remeto won eight of 12 faceoffs to lead host John Carroll (2-0) over Northern-Calvert (0-1). Jacob Lotz made 14 saves for John Carroll.

Girls lacrosse

No. 2 Notre Dame Prep 14, Maryvale 6: The host Blazers (2-0, 2-0 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) put up 14 goals in their second-straight win. NDP beat Mount de Sales, 14-7, on Tuesday. The Lions fell to 1-2-1, 1-2. The Blazers travel to Gerstell 4 p.m. Monday.

No. 9 Roland Park 17, Severn 8: The visiting Reds (3-1, 3-0 IAAM A Conference) built a 12-2 lead in the first half and routed the Admirals (0-3, 0-3). Shannon Smith scored a game-high six goals and had 10 draw controls and Katherine Riehl and Kaitlin Shaw each had a hat trick for Roland Park. Bella Ingrao and Camryn Levin each scored three goals for Severn. The Reds lone loss so far was 17-11 to Agnes Irwin (Pa.) on Saturday.

Catonsville 11, Manchester Valley 6: Kolby Weedon had five goals and an assist and Lindsey Marshall added three goals and an assist for the Comets (1-0).

St. Catherine’s (Va.) 13, Garrison Forest 5: The Grizzlies (0-2) fell to the Saints (2-0) at the University of Richmond. Garrison Forest lost 20-10 to Collegiate School (Va.) on Wednesday.
