Varsity roundup: No. 1 St. Paul's boys lacrosse edged, 12-11, at Springfest tournament

Dawes Milchling scored six goals for the top-ranked St. Paul's boys lacrosse team at its Springfest tournament, but it wasn't enough.

The Crusaders (4-2) drew within a goal twice in the closing minutes but fell, 12-11, to Garden City (N.Y.) on Saturday.

The tournament benefited the One Love Foundation, named in honor of the late Virginia and Notre Dame Prep lacrosse player Yeardley Love.

St. Paul's circle offense kept pace with the Trojans' isolation game for the first quarter. Then Garden City (1-1) went on a five-goal tear; Conor Muldoon scored two of his game-high four goals during the run.

The Trojans scored three straight on two extra-man opportunities and a one-man fastbreak by faceoff specialist James Sullivan for an 8-4 lead with 2:38 left in the half.

The third quarter, like the first, featured three goals by both teams before the Crusaders went on a 4-1 run in the fourth quarter.

St. Paul's cut into the deficit by responding 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, when Alex McGovern found Milchling for a goal, making it 11-8. His second score of the quarter brought the Crusaders within 11-10 with 5:28 left.

St. Paul's pulled goalkeeper Alex Rode, but it backfired when a Crusaders defenseman flipped the ball into the stick of Garden City's JP Basile, who scored an empty-netter with 1:27 left. McGovern would draw St. Paul's within 12-11 with 51.3 seconds left, but the Crusaders' last shot with two seconds left went wide.

Trojans goalie Sam Lucchesi made 24 saves, including five in a row in a one-minute span in the third quarter.

No. 3 Boys' Latin 8, Manhasset (N.Y.) 6: Syracuse recruit Devin Shewell had two goals and two assists and fellow Orange recruit Logan Wisnauskas scored twice to power the Lakers (4-1) past the Indians (0-2) at the Springfest tournament at St.Paul's.

Boys' Latin used two men behind the goal to invert the offense and create scoring chances.

After falling behind 3-2 in the first quarter, the Lakers used a 4-1 run over the next two quarters to build the lead.

Manhasset drew within 7-6 with 5:07 left in the game before Wisnauskas scored a behind-the-back goal with 2:15 left for the final score.

Boys' Latin coach Bob Shriver said the wing play and faceoffs were not what he expected of his team, but he was pleased with the defense.

"If we can hold our opponents to six goals, that would be good," he said.

No. 7 Gilman 11, Malvern Prep (Pa.) 10: Jake Waxter and Andy Matthews gave the visiting Greyhounds (1-0) a two-goal lead before the Friars (0-3) scored with less than a minute to play.
