Varsity roundup: No. 5 Mount Carmel beats No. 1 Calvert Hall in 2OT

A jumper by Frank Webb was the go-ahead score, and Montez Mathis added the exclamation point with a dunk in the closing minute of the second overtime as the No. 5 Mount Carmel boys basketball team beat No. 1 Calvert Hall, 95-91, in Friday's second round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament in Cumberland.

Webb's jumper gave the Cougars (32-10) a 92-91 lead with 35 seconds left. Will Jenkins broke the Cardinals' press with a full-court pass to Mathis (23 points), who completed a three-point play for the final score.

Calvert Hall (29-7) led for most of regulation, up by 11 at halftime and by six going into the fourth quarter. But the Cardinals fell behind, trailing by four with 30 seconds left in regulation.

Calvert Hall's Drew Edwards, who finished with a game-high 34 points, made two free throws to force the first overtime and a 3-pointer to force the second.

Mount Carmel advances to face Paul VI (Va.), an 88-50 winner over Bishop Walsh, in today's consolation championship (fifth place) at 4:45 p.m. The Cardinals face the host Spartans in the seventh-place game at 3p.m.

DeMatha 61, No. 3 John Carroll 52: The Patriots (28-8) fell to the Stags (32-4) in the second round of the Alhambra Invitational.

DeMatha will face St. John's (D.C.) for a fourth time this season in the finals. John Carroll will vie for third place against Gonzaga (D.C.).

Boys lacrosse

Landon 14, St. Mary's 5: Alex Woodall won 13 of 20 faceoffs to keep the Saints (0-1) in the game, but St. Mary's fell to the host Bears (2-0).

The Saints' Bennett Johnson and Landon's Griffin Brown each scored twice. The Bears are ranked 15th in the nation in the Inside Lacrosse/Under Armour poll.

Severn 18, Sts. Peter & Paul 4: Max Bailey, Charlie Olmert and Hunter Tyler had three goals each to power the host Admirals (1-0) past the Sabres (0-1).

Severn led 13-1 at halftime.

Girls lacrosse

Roland Park 14, Collegiate School (Va.) 8: Francesca Whitehurst scored a game-high five goals to lead the Reds (1-0) past the host Cougars (0-1).

Roland Park built a 9-4 halftime lead.

No. 3 John Carroll 75, Paul VI (Va.) 73, OT: Elijah Long made the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime to lift the Patriots (28-7) over the Panthers in the opening round of the Alhambra Invitational.

Long, who scored 21 of his 23 points after the half, made the game-tying shot with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Corey Manigault, a 6-9 Division I prospect, had 21 points for Paul VI.

John Carroll played DeMatha, an 85-32 winner over host Bishop Walsh, in Friday's second round.

St. John's (D.C.) 82, No. 1 Calvert Hall 78, 2OT: The Cardinals had four starters reach double figures, but it wasn't enough to get pastthe Washington power in the opening round of the Alhambra Invitational.

Drew Edwards scored 20 points, Nico Clareth had 18, Justin Gorham had 16 and Evan Phoenix added 13 as Calvert Hall led for most of regulation before surrendering a three-point lead in the final 1:08.

Clareth sent the game into double overtime with a 3-pointer.

"It was a great game. I thought we could have probably played a little better, but they hit some big shots so credit to them," Cardinals coach John Bauersfeld said.
