Varsity roundup (March 10): Mount Saint Joseph upends No. 1 St. Frances at basketball invitational

The fourth time proved to be the charm for No. 3 Mount Saint Joseph boys basketball. After two regular-season and one playoff loss to No. 1 St. Frances, the Gaels (31-7) found a way to win, 71-58, Friday in the second round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational basketball tournament at the Cordts Physical Education Center in Frostburg.

Jalen Smith had 25 points and 11 rebounds, Tyree Myers had 13 points and six assists and Ausar Crawley had 12 points and five assists for Mount Saint Joseph, which will face St. Maria Goretti in today's fifth-place game at 4:45 p.m.

The Gaels used a combination offense, transition and halfcourt, to take a 35-30 halftime lead. In the second half, Mount Saint Joseph switched to a zone defense to hold off the Panthers (35-7).

St. Frances will face Bishop Walsh in the seventh-place game today at 3 p.m.

St. Maria Goretti 84, Bishop Walsh 49: The Gaels (29-9) bounced back from their opening round loss and beat the Spartans (9-11) in the second round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational tournament.

Boys lacrosse

Archbishop Spalding 14, Friends 8: Nick McFarland had four goals to lead the visiting Cavaliers past the Quakers in the season-opener for both squads. Friends put together a 4-0 run late in the game.
