Baltimore high school sports portal (March 7): DeMatha holds off St. Frances at tourney

From Sun staff reports

DeMatha used a 9-4 run in the second overtime to topple No. 3 St. Frances, 79-74, in the opening round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational boys basketball tournament at Frostburg State on Thursday.

The Panthers (35-6) will face Baltimore Catholic League runner-up St. Maria Goretti, which lost, 70-58, to St. John's (D.C.), today at 4 p.m. The Stags improved to 31-5.

St. Frances took a 40-31 lead in the first half, but DeMatha charged back to take a 60-59 lead with 3:53 left in regulation. The Panthers took back the lead, 64-62, with 1:15 left before the game was tied with 4.3 seconds left. St. Frances made two free throws with less than a second left to tie the score at 70 and force a second overtime.

DeMatha was patient on offense, using ball movement and size on the inside to score.
