Varsity roundup (March 1): Jalen Smith leads Mount Saint Joseph to Baltimore Catholic League semifinals

No. 4 Mount Saint Joseph 86, Archbishop Spalding 57: Jalen Smith scored a career-high 36 points, including his 2,000th career point, to lead the host Gaels (29-5) past the Cavaliers (4-24) in a Baltimore Catholic League quarterfinal.

St. Maria Goretti 57, Loyola Blakefield 49: JJ Hallaby scored 14 points, but the Dons (14-15) fell to the host Gaels (29-7) in a BCL quarterfinal.

Goretti will face Mount Saint Joseph in Saturday's semifinal at 5:30 p.m. at Goucher.

Annapolis Area Christian 68, Bullis 55: Dylin Borden scored 17 points to lead the host Eagles (11-15) past the Bulldogs (22-11) in an Maryland Independent Schools semifinal. AACS will host Gilman, a 63-55 winner over St. Vincent Pallotti, in tonight's championship at 7 p.m.

No. 1 John Carroll 93, Calvert Hall 52: The host Patriots (29-7) beat the Cardinals (12-18) to advance to face No. 3 St. Frances in Saturday's Baltimore Catholic League semifinal at 7:30 p.m. at Goucher College. The win marked the sixth straight for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions.

No. 3 St. Frances 85, Mount Carmel 51: Rajeir Jones and Bassirou Diop each scored 12 points to lead the host Panthers (33-5) over the Cougars (13-23) in a BCL quarterfinal. St. Frances led 23-9 in the first quarter.
