Roundup: Slatniske lifts South Carroll in 2A-1A West region wrestling final

Wrestling in the 170-pound bracket in the Class 2A-1A West region finals, No. 8 South Carroll's Wade Slatniske pinned Catoctin's Kevin Simmel with just one second remaining in the first period. The pin helped lift the Cavaliers to the title.

Slatniske is 44-0 with 42 pins and seems to be ready for the state championships next weekend. A season ago, he suffered a midseason knee injury, and although he made it back for the postseason, some his strength had been sapped by the injury and he ended up finishing fourth at states.

"You have to think you are one of the best because if you don't expect to win, nobody respects you," Slatniske said. "It's very important to keep this going. I've dreamed since fifth grade about being a state champion, and right now we are in a good spot to make a run at it — and that means everything."

South Carroll's Tim Null (113, 43-1) and Joey Thomas (106) came through with victories at the meet's end to clinch the title.

The top four placers in each weight class advance to Saturday's state finals at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House.
