Thursday's much-anticipated girls basketball rematch between Aberdeen and host Joppatowne turned out to be a lopsided 82-40 win for the visiting Eagles, who stayed unbeaten in the Chesapeake Division of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference.
Aberdeen, 19-0, division champions at 10-0 and ranked No. 1, used its relentless full-court press to force the Mariners (16-4, 9-2) into numerous turnovers throughout the first half. The Eagles led 31-8 after one quarter, 45-21 at the half and 68-38 after three quarters.
Junior center Bri Jones dominated in the paint, scoring 35 points and seemingly grabbing as many rebounds.
Lakeia Hayden, with 13 points, was the only other Eagle to score in double figures, while Shakara Head was more than half of the Joppatowne offense, scoring 26.
"They all meshed together, they all played well tonight; it was a good win," Aberdeen coach Stacy Liles said.
Joppatowne coach Mike Harris pointed to Wednesday's missed day of practice as a problem. "Wish we'd been able to practice yesterday; we knew what was coming," he said.
No. 9 Glenelg 53, Marriotts Ridge 35: Emily Russo scored a game-high 22 points and Sam Heisig added 18 to power the visiting Gladiators (19-1) past the Mustangs.
Glenelg led 30-19 at the half.
Fallston 58, North Harford 43: Rachael Holehouse scored 11 of her 22 points in the third quarter to power the host Cougars past the Hawks.
Boys basketball
Calvert Hall 72, McDonogh 55: Justi Beck had 23 points to lead the visiting Cardinals (10-15, 5-9 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) past the Eagles (14-12, 6-10).
Wrestling
No. 8 Owings Mills wins 2: The Eagles won the Class 2A-1A North Dual Meet Regional Championship, beating Dundalk, 68-12, and Edmondson in the finals, 75-3. Owings Mills won 12 of 13 by pin, 10 in the first period and six in less than a minute. The Eagles advance to Saturday's state dual-meet championships at North Point in Waldorf.
