Top-ranked Mount Carmel completed the regular season with a win Thursday in boys basketball and secured the top spot in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournament.
The Cougars beat visiting Glenelg Country School, 78-60, and finished 25-6, 15-3. The Dragons fell to 11-14, 4-13.
A trio of scorers in double figures — Terry Nolan (17 points), Brian Jefferson (14) and Will Jenkins III (13) — led the way for Mount Carmel.
The Cougars earned a first-round bye and will await the winner of the fifth- and sixth-seeded teams in second-round action Thursday.
River Hill 52, No. 3 Oakland Mills 51: Riding the hot hand of Gary Sandler (a career-high 22 points), the host Hawks (10-5, 13-5), who had trailed by as many as 13 in the second quarter, climbed back into a one-possession game in the final minutes.
With less than a minute left, Charlie Thomas delivered what turned out to be the winning basket.
The victory for River Hill avenged a 70-52 loss to the Scorpions (13-2, 15-3) earlier this season. And it came despite Thomas, who averages over 23 points a game, sitting for most of the second half and being held to just 11 points overall.
