Roundup: No. 6 John Carroll boys top Spalding, 46-43

The No. 6 John Carroll boys basketball found itself trailing by six points about midway through the fourth quarter Tuesday. Coach Tony Martin called in a change in defense, and the Patriots started to run and beat Archbishop Spalding, 46-43.

John Carroll (21-5, 10-2 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association AConference) had led by as many as seven early in the game but fell behind in the second half. The Patriots switched defenses from man-to-man to a 1-3-1 zone that got their transition game going. Rodney Elliott finished with 11 points and Earl Potts had a game-high 19 points for the Cavaliers (14-11, 6-6).

John Carroll trails division leader Mount St. Joseph (21-4, 11-2).

No. 13 Poly 87, No. 4 Patterson 86, 2OT: The host Engineers (11-5) needed double overtime to upset the Clippers (11-6).

No. 7 Forest Park 79, Northwestern 47: Anton Waters had 26 points and 24 rebounds to power the host Foresters (12-1) past the Wildcats. Forest Park's defense limited Northwestern to 12 points in the first half.

No. 9 Arundel 80, Meade 54: Aaron Brown scored a game-high 29 points, but the host Mustangs fell to the Wildcats (16-0).

David Nicholson had 15 points for Arundel, which led 42-23 at the half.

No. 12 Glen Burnie 74, Southern 49: Brandon Spain scored 18 points and William Brown added 17 to power the host Gophers (16-1) past the Bulldogs.

Eric Lendsey led Southern with 24 points. Glen Burnie used a fast-break transition game to take a 28-16 lead after the first quarter.

Mount Carmel 65, Calvert Hall 59: Corey Groom scored a game-high 19 points and the host Cougars (8-14, 3-11 MIAA A Conference) jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter.

Justin Beck led the Cardinals (9-13, 4-7) with 15 points. Four technical fouls were issued during the game, one against the Mount Carmel bench and three on the Cardinals.

St. Maria Goretti 50, Loyola 48, OT: Tyrus Fleetwood had 15 points and the visiting Gaels outscored the Dons (9-13) by 5-3 in overtime. Loyola trailed 38-26 going into the fourth quarter, where it outscored Goretti 19-7 to force overtime. Matt Dunn had a game-high 18 points for the Dons.

Gilman 51, Boys' Latin 47: Ben Grace hit a 3-pointer with a minute left for a four-point Greyhounds lead and went 6-for-6 down the stretch to preserve the win. Ryan Ripken led Gilman (16-5, 13-1 MIAA B Conference) with 21 points, and Colin Heacock had 16 for the Lakers (11-10, 8-7).

Chapelgate Christian Academy 64, Friends 63: Isiah Harris scored 25 points for the Yellowjackets (10-13), and the Quakers missed the tying free throw with two seconds left in the game.

Girls basketball

No. 1 Aberdeen 71, Bel Air 28: Bri Jones had 28 points and 12 rebounds to power the host Eagles (17-0) past the Bobcats.

No. 7 Meade 64, Arundel 46: Diamond Henson had 19 points to lead the host Mustangs (11-5) past the Wildcats (6-10).

Arundel led 8-5 in the first quarter before Meade took control for a 36-26 halftime lead. Sandra Davis had a game-high 21 points for Arundel.

Wrestling

No. 10 River Hill 82, Long Reach -1: The visiting Hawks (28-6) collected nine forfeits and four pins to win. Christian Lee (126), Rommel Marcelino (132), Jack Noonan (160) and Cory Daniel (170) all had pins for River Hill.
