John Carroll used an uplifting press and tenacious defense in the fourth quarter that lifted the Patriots past host and upset-minded C. Milton Wright, 46-44, Thursday night in an non-league boys basketball game between two schools separated by less than two miles.
CMW, which trailed by two, 18-16, at the half, outscored the Patriots, 20-9, in quarter three to go ahead, 36-27, the game's largest lead by either team. Mychal Stefanides scored 10 of his game-high 17 points to spur the Mustangs (12-1).
John Carroll (22-1) then went to work to start the fourth. A five second inbounds call against CMW fueled an 9-0 John Carroll run. A second, five-second infraction in the scoring run played right into the Patriots hands, who tied the game at 36.
No. 12 St. Frances 81, No. 7 Milford Mill 70: Tightly-contested throughout, the Panthers pulled away in the final minutes to come away with the win behind an 18-point performance from guard Kurk Lee Jr.
The Panthers (18-6) started the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 66-57 advantage with 5:44 to play only to see the Millers (9-3) rally.
Consecutive baskets from Milford Mill's Elijah Cooper (game-high 25 points) cut the lead to 72-68, but the Panthers answered when Andre Rafus dunked home an alley-oop pass from Daquan Bracey on the next possession.

Girls basketball
St. John's-Catholic Prep 61, Annapolis Area Christian School 58: In a matchup of the only two unbeaten teams in B Conference play, the visiting Vikings (18-1) built an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a victory over the Eagles (15-2).
Taylor Murray scored 27 points to lead the Eagles, who fought back from the deficit and had several chances to tie the game in the final minute.

No. 9 Archbishop Spalding 60, John Carroll 47: Kaila Clark and Victoria Reynolds combined to score 39 points, 20 and 19 respectively, to power the Cavaliers (13-6) past the host Patriots (5-12).
Spalding broke a 36-all third-quarter tie with a 24-11 run in the fourth quarter.
Wrestling
No. 13 Archbishop Spalding 37, Boys' Latin 36: In the final match, Spalding's Nick Buonassisi (285) claimed a 2-1 decision over Brian North to tie the score at 36, the third overall tie, and the Cavaliers (16-9) won by criteria H: the most points scored in the first periods.
The host Lakers (16-5) won three straight matches, 170, 182 and 195, to take a 36-27 lead. Spalding claimed the final two with wins by Jacob Parker (220) and Buonassisi.
For Boys' Latin, Rocco Bruno (182) got his 100th career win.
