Mount Carmel got its second upset over a ranked opponent in as many days in boys basketball. After upsetting No. 4 St. Frances on Friday, the visiting Cougars (12-6) beat No.12 McDonogh, 72-48, on Saturday.
On Friday, defense led the Cougars to a 77-59 win over the Panthers. Against the Eagles (9-5), Mount Carmel rallied in the second half to win.
McDonogh jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter before Mount Carmel took a 27-25 halftime lead. The Cougars scored more than 20 points in each quarter in the second half and held McDonogh to 12 points or fewer per quarter.
Terry Nolan led Mount Carmel with 15 points, and Brian Jefferson Jr. scored 12 points.
Girls basketball
Chesapeake-AA 50, Overlea 32: Brooke Worrell scored 15 points and Hallie Persell had 11 to lead the Cougars (8-0) past the Falcons (4-2) at the Dundalk Holiday Tournament championship game.
Destiny Owens had nine points for Overlea.
Mount de Sales 62, St. Paul's 45: The host Sailors (7-4), led by Madison Burris with a game-high 22 points, used a 20-3 run in the third quarter to beat the Gators.
Mount de Sales led 26-24 at the break.
Football
Commitment: Calvert Hall wide receiver Lawrence Cager committed to Miami on Saturday, making his announcement at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
During the live broadcast on NBC, Cager donned a Hurricanes cap, selecting Miami over Alabama, Georgia and Virginia Tech.
