Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Sean Williams Jr., Milford Mill, football
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior running back, a Mount Saint Joseph transfer, has been a welcome addition to the No. 7 Millers’ backfield in the team’s 2-0 start. In Friday’s 48-8 win over Hereford in Baltimore County play, Williams ran 12 times for 211 yards and five touchdowns — a 70-yard scamper the highlight. He opened the season with 143 rushing yards and one score in a 42-7 win over Franklin.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Kyleigh Bland, Broadneck, soccer
The junior goalie was flawless in the first week of play as the No. 3 Bruins didn’t allow a goal in their 2-0-1 start. Last Tuesday, Bland registered eight saves in the Bruins’ season-opening 0-0 tie against No. 2 Archbishop Spalding. After a two-save performance in a 1-0 win over North County on Wednesday, Bland stopped eight shots as the Bruins knocked off host and No. 5 Mercy at Saturday’s IAAM Challenge III.
