Baltimore Sun’s high school Athletes of the Week (May 2-8): Archbishop Spalding’s Caleb Estes and Oakland Mills’ Sara Novak

Caleb Estes of Archbishop Spalding baseball and Sara Novak of Oakland Mills girls lacrosse are The Baltimore Sun's high school Athletes of the Week for May 2-8, 2022.

Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.

Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Caleb Estes, Archbishop Spalding, baseball

The senior shortstop once again proved instrumental in two more wins for the No. 1 Cavaliers (23-4) as they continued to roll in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.

In wins over Archbishop Curley (5-1 on May 3) and Loyola Blakefield (10-1 on Thursday), Estes batted .571 with six RBIs, four runs and one stolen base. He hit a home run in both games as the Cavaliers clinched first place with a 13-0 league mark.

For the season, Estes is batting .412 with 10 extra-base hits, 25 RBIs and 32 runs.

Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Sara Novak, Oakland Mills, lacrosse

The junior midfielder posted staggering numbers in leading the Scorpions to two Howard County wins, finishing with 21 goals and three assists.

In an 18-8 win over Hammond on May 2, she tallied 11 goals and an assist. She followed that with a 10-goal, two-assist effort in the Scorpions’ 20-15 win against Long Reach.

A varsity player since her freshman year, Novak has 72 goals and 20 assists this season for Oakland Mills (4-8).
