Baltimore Sun’s high school Athletes of the Week (May 16-22): McDonogh’s McCabe Millon and South Carroll’s Maddie Karns

Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.

Boys sport Athlete of the Week: McCabe Millon, McDonogh, lacrosse

On the season’s biggest stage — Friday’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship game — the junior attackman was the best player on the field as the Eagles (13-6) claimed a 14-8 win over St. Mary’s at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Millon finished with four goals and two assists to help the Eagles stake an early lead, and then he came up equally big in the second half to protect the advantage. In Tuesday’s 11-10 semifinal win over defending league champion Boys’ Latin, he finished with two goals.

A Duke commit, who is Inside Lacrosse’s top-rated prospect in the 2023 class, Millon finished the season with 50 goals and 28 assists. In an abbreviated 2021 season, he posted 27 goals and 23 assists in 11 games.

Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Maddie Karns, South Carroll, softball

The junior pitcher was on the mound for all three of South Carroll’s playoff wins last week, sending them to Tuesday’s Class 1A state semifinals. Karns’ best work came in Saturday’s 2-0 quarterfinal win over St. Michaels, when she tossed a one-hitter with six strikeouts and also had an RBI single. In helping the Cavaliers (10-10) claim the 1A West Region I title, she pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in an 11-0 semifinal win over Western Tech on Tuesday before allowing three hits while striking out eight in a 7-3 win over Liberty.
