Baltimore Sun’s high school Athletes of the Week (March-7-13): Gilman’s Donovan Young and Poly’s Da’Brya Clark

Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school boy and girl for their athletic achievements.

Boy Athlete of the Week: Donovan Young, Gilman, track and field

The senior saved the best work of his career for an ideal time Saturday, capturing the triple jump at the prestigious New Balance Indoor Nationals at New York Armory in New York City. Young claimed the gold medal with a personal best of 48 feet, 11.75 inches that also was a Maryland record.

A four-year varsity athlete, he also won the triple jump and long jump at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship, helping the Greyhounds to a third-place finish.

Girl Athlete of the Week: Da’Brya Clark, Poly, basketball

The junior guard took the lead role in Poly bringing home the program’s first Class 3A state title, capped by a 60-37 win over previously undefeated Howard on Saturday at the University of Maryland’s Xfinity Center. She enjoyed a 20-point, eight-rebound performance in Saturday’s win, adding five assists and three steals.

In Wednesday’s 73-52 semifinal win over C. Milton Wright, Clark, who averaged 10 points in the Engineers’ 18-3 season, finished with 12 points and five assists.
