Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school boy and girl for their athletic achievements.
Boy Athlete of the Week: Devin Roche, Dunbar, football
The 5-foot-8, 165-pound junior running back was the ultimate multi-purpose weapon in Saturday’s dramatic 48-46 overtime win against Mervo.
Pressed into quarterback duties after the first quarter following an illness to starter Jeremiah Dallas, Roche accumulated 260 yards of total offense and threw two touchdown passes in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Roche ran 21 times for 141 yards and two scores, including a 69-yard touchdown scamper, and completed 5-of-8 passes for 119 yards and three more scores.
Trailing 40-24 late in the fourth quarter, he threw touchdown passes of 25 and 61 yards with the Poets (3-0) converting both two-point conversions to force overtime.
Roche, who is drawing interest from Division I colleges, including Maryland, has run for 205 yards on the season.
Girl Athlete of the Week: Maya Everett, Broadneck, field hockey
With the Bruins opening the Anne Arundel County slate with some of their biggest rivals last week — opening against South River and Arundel — the junior midfielder shined in two wins.
Everett opened last week with one assist in a 3-1 win over the Seahawks on Sept. 13. In the Bruins’ 5-1 win over Arundel on Wednesday, she scored a goal and added three assists.
In her third varsity season, Everett, who has four goals and four assists in the Bruins’ 4-0 start, displays great stickwork and field vision in her strong two-way game.
The Bruins opened the season hosting the Broadneck Tournament on Sept. 4 and defeated Mount de Sales (4-0) and River Hill (1-0) with Everett scoring three goals on the day.
