Griffith has been slowly building the Harford Tech program during his four years as coach, and everything came into place this season. The Cobras won the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference title and then the region before taking second in the Class 1A state meet, losing to Smithsburg by four points.

The school got an outdoor track for the first time, and Griffith said that was a big reason for the success. "It helped a ton — it really did," he said.

But Griffith said the other key factor was getting a good number of girls to come out for the sport and find success. Now, with a track and facilities — instead of running on grass all the time — the Harford Tech coaches could work with the Cobras on different specialties, a reason they were so strong throughout their lineup.
