The Broadneck defense spent much of Friday night’s boys lacrosse game against visiting rival Severna Park looking for some way to stop Jimmy Maher. Despite a lot of effort, the Bruins could not solve this puzzle.
Maher finished with eight goals and three assists as No. 9 Severna Park jumped to a big early lead and rolled to a 16-7 victory over No. 12 Broadneck.
Severna Park (7-0) scored the game’s first four goals before Broadneck (5-1) even got a shot. The Falcons kept possession for long stretches while the Bruins could not get the ball nearly enough to make a difference.
But a lot of those Severna Park possessions ended with Maher. He scored three goals in the first period, each on a quick move that helped the senior find open space and a good shot.
Keegan Houser led Broadneck with two goals and one assist. Houser also had the shot that made Severna Park pause a bit when he fired a bullet that appeared to hit starting goalie Shane Carr in the right leg.
Carr was down for a few moments, got helped to his feet and then hopped off the rainy field on his left leg. He came out with 6:13 left in the third quarter and did not return.
Carr finished with three saves, and Casey Fox came on after that and played well. Fox made four saves and gave up just two goals the rest of the way.
After Severna Park took the 9-1 lead, the Bruins made some noise late in the second quarter. Houser and Vinny Facciponti (two) combined to score three goals in 68 seconds, and that cut the halftime deficit to 9-4.

Broadneck’s Parker Griffey then scored 30 seconds into the second half, and that made it 9-5, and the Bruins appeared to be trying to rally. However, Maher scored on a shot just inside the far post, and that started the Falcons on a four-goal run, which gave them a 13-5 edge with 2:39 left in the period.
