The Georgia Tech-bound Markey dominated like few other pitchers in metro-area history, leading the top-ranked Mustangs (23-0) to their first-ever state title and a No. 14 national ranking by USA Today.

Markey finished 8-0 with a 0.58 ERA, allowing just four earned runs in 482/3 innings. He struck out 56 and walked just five. The 5-foot-10 right-hander, whose pitches have been clocked as high as 90 mph, carried a scoreless streak of 27 innings into the Class 3A final, going the distance in a 4-1 win over Huntingtown.

His best all-around game came in the Class 3A North regional final against Towson, when he pitched a five-inning no-hitter, allowing his only base-runner on an error, and drove in five runs.

When not on the mound, Markey was a standout shortstop. He batted .426 with six doubles, six triples and a team-leading 35 RBIs. His combined efforts helped C. Milton Wright become the first public school team in Maryland to go unbeaten in a decade.
