Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school boy and girl for their athletic achievements.
Boy Athlete of the Week: Luke Bamgboye, Mount Carmel, basketball
A London native in his first year at Mount Carmel, the 6-foot-10 sophomore center has made an immediate impact at both ends of the floor for the No. 5 Cougars. That was most apparent in Thursday’s 84-66 win at No. 9 Loyola Blakefield, when he recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 14 blocked shots and 10 rebounds.
Bamgboye followed with another fine performance on Saturday, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as the Cougars claimed a 57-48 win over Bishop O’Connell at the Route 1 Athletics Classic at Harford Community College.
With Mount Carmel now 11-1 on the season, Bamgboye is averaging 12 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots per game.
Girl Athlete of the Week: Madison Knight, Patterson Mill, basketball
The senior forward and captain produced double-doubles in two Harford County wins last week as Patterson Mill improved to 6-2 on the season.
On Tuesday, Knight scored 18 points and added 19 rebounds in leading the Huskies to a 49-22 win over North Harford. On Thursday, she helped the Huskies end Harford Tech’s six-game win streak with 16 points and 20 rebounds in a 48-37 win.
A starter since her freshman year, she is averaging 19.3 points and 15.5 rebounds. A star pitcher on the softball team, Knight, who committed to Syracuse, led the Huskies to their first Class 1A state title last year.
