Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Wednesday, Aug. 24


Bel Air 221, North Harford 222: Cade Zengel led a balanced pack as Bel Air won by one stroke at Geneva Farm. Zengel shot a 43, Matt Young and Ryan Zudzina were right behind him with 44s and Ben Bowen and Rowan Edwards shot 45s. For North Harford, Greg Sebring had the low-round with a 40, John Manzari shot a 43, Lucas Parks carded a 44, Coulter Parsons shot a 47 and Cooper Honig shot a 48.


Northeast 195, North County 242, Glen Burnie 254, Meade 281: The Eagles captured a C Division win thanks to scores by the whole team. Ethan Mabe shot the best score (42) while teammates Andrew Pangalis, Sean Forster and Scott Czyz all posted 51s, Landon Brown got 54 and Jackson Powell shot 62.

South Carroll 163, Westminster 164, South Hagerstown 176: The Cavaliers narrowly picked up the win at Westminster National. Westminster’s Riley Smith was the match medalist shooting a 38.


Manchester Valley 167, Liberty 169: Manchester Valley picked up a narrow county win over the Lions at Oakmont Green. Jacob Gouge led the Mavericks with a 39. Liberty’s Spencer Trump was medalist with a 37.

Winters Mill 167, Century 181, Francis Scott Key 251: Gianni Serafin posted a 38 and Tyler Kimble backed him with a 41 as the Falcons won a tri-match at Westminster National. Shane Cole and Hayden Brilhart added 44s for Winters Mill. Ryan Durborow shot a 40 to lead Century and Brody Comer added a 41. Brandon Paugh led FSK with a 59.

Boys soccer

John Carroll 6, St. Paul’s 0: Senior Ryan Skandalis scored three goals in the visiting Patriots’ season opener. Luke Mejia opened the scoring with a header, while Josh Petty and Christian Rugel also netted a goal each. Assists were credited to Austin Hoffman, Logan Boltz, Connor Ellis, Mejia, Petty and Skandalis. John Carroll keepers Tyler Mezzadra and Amir Smith combined for two saves.

Calvert Hall 3, Mount St. Joseph 1: Cody Angelini scored twice in the first half to lift the Cardinals in a season-opening win. Shan Chung got Mount St. Joseph on the board in the second half, but Justin Crow added a late insurance goal. Frankie Mattucci had two assists for Calvert Hall and Tyler Flynn had one assist. Nate Jones made four saves in the win.
