Loyola Blakefield knocked off sixth-ranked Mount Saint Joseph, 62-57, on Friday night. After trailing early in the game 7-2, Loyola went on a 15-3 run to end the first quarter and never trailed again. The visiting Dons led 24-21 at the half and 37-34 after three quarters. Loyola then went on a run again, extending the lead to 49-40 midway through the fourth quarter. The Gaels staged a comeback behind James Bishop (24 points), eventually cutting the lead to 59-57 with under a minute to play. MSJ had the ball with 25 seconds when Loyola senior Conner Hepting came up with a steal. Free throws in the closing seconds sealed the game for Loyola. Tryllian Young led the Dons with 24 points. Cam Smith and Dubem Nnake each contributed 8 points as well.

Vermont opens lacrosseseason with win over Utah

Vermont opened the 2019 men's NCAA lacrosse season with a 21-6 victory over Utah, a first-year program coached by former Gilman standout Brian Holman. Ben French scored four goals to lead the Catamounts, while David Clousterman and Rob Hudson each scored three for the winners. Josh Stout led Utah with three goals.

More men's college lacrosse: Salisbury is ranked No. 2 in Inside Lacrosse's first Division III Media Poll. Salisbury also was voted No. 1 in the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Preseason Poll. ... Seniors Jason Brewster, Billy Nolan (Arundel) and Gunnar Schimoler (South River) and junior Nick Griffin (Liberty) were named team captains for UMBC. ... Stevenson was selected as the favorite in the conference preseason poll conducted among the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth coaches.

College softball: Coppin State 's Cayla Brown, Nia Bowe, Madison Didion, Megan Narvaez and Nicole Ullman were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference team.

Women's college basketball: Community College of Baltimore County Dundalk named Donald Clark as its coach. This is Clark's fourth stint on a Lions coaching staff.

Women's college bowling: Mount St. Mary's freshman Rebecca Dodson has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Dodson helped lead the Mount to a third-place finish at the Red Flash Invite this past weekend with consistent play throughout the tournament, as she registered the most strikes (64) among NEC bowlers.
