Winters Mill's Matt Miller was named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week for leading the Falcons to a 40-36 victory over Bohemia Manor last week.
The Falcons rolled up a 21-0 lead, but Bo Manor climbed back into the game and Winters Mill needed a big defensive stop in the final three minutes to preserve the victory and a 2-0 start to the season. Defensive ends Casey Rowe and Dawson Wisner combined to sack Bo Manor's quarterback on fourth down and the Falcons held on.
"We try to challenge our kids every day and put them in tough games against good teams," Miller said in a news release. "We challenge them to make plays, and this year we've had guys stepping up and making those plays for us. The kids have always known what they have to do, but now, they are making the plays too."
The Falcons got off the to quick start when Troy Blessing returned a kick for an 83-yard touchdown. Dimeon Wright then caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Alex Barnes and Tre Woodyard returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown. After that, the game turned into a back-and-forth contest although the Falcons never trailed. Glen Acha added what would be the game-winning touchdown on his second straight 6-yard scoring run.
The Falcons are 2-0 for the first time four years and with a win over Poolesville Friday, they would be 3-0 for the first time in seven years.
Miller is the second Ravens Coach of the Week this season following Centennial's Carlos Dunmoodie. The two, along with the winners for each week of the regular season, will be honored Dec. 18 at the Ravens-Eagles game at M&T Bank Stadium. One coach will be named the Ravens High School Football Coach of the Year.
Each weekly winner receives a $2,000 donation to his athletics department and an award from Ravens coach John Harbaugh.
