PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
Duane Parker
Mount St. JosephLike his older brother (Woodlawn senior Dwight Parker), Parker has become a track standout. The sophomore had a big season for the Gaels this winter and helped them win the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title.
Parker has been the team captain his first two years and lived up to his leadership role by showing plenty of versatility. He was undefeated in the 300 meters and the long and triple jumps. Parker also ran the first leg in the 800 relay. Parker won four gold medals at the MIAA championships as the Gaels routed the field.
Parker was voted the team Most Valuable Player in indoor track each of his first two years and also last spring. Coach Gene Constantine said Parker is a quiet leader who took the Gaels to another level.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Steve Williams
PolyThe Engineers won their first Baltimore City and state championships this winter, buying into Williams' team approach to pull out some narrow wins in big meets.
Despite getting disqualifications in four of the night's 13 events, Poly still edged out Mervo for the city title. The Engineers then relied heavily on relay races and Jamin Gallman to beat out Liberty for the Class 2A-1A state championship.
