OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Ryan Pentz
CenturyThis senior running back was the most dangerous offensive threat in Carroll County, whether carrying the ball or catching passes out of the backfield. Playing on a team that won just one game a year ago, Pentz gained 1,011 yards on 194 carries with eight touchdowns, adding another 260 yards on 27 receptions. In total, he scored 11 touchdowns and four two-point conversions.
He was responsible for more than half of Century's total offense, helping the Knights improve to 5-5, including 4-2 in the county. Perhaps most impressively, Pentz, also a standout defensive back, committed just one turnover all season despite touching the ball 238 times among rushing, receiving and kick returns.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Matt Hyson
Francis Scott KeyThe senior linebacker wasn't flashy, but he always found a way to get the job done for the Carroll County champions. Hyson finished with a county-best 166 tackles from his position at inside linebacker, anchoring a defense that held five teams -- North Carroll, Frederick, Century, Walkersville and South Carroll -- to two touchdowns or less.
Hyson, 5 feet 11 and 175 pounds, approached the game in a business-like manner, excelling at making reads at the line of scrimmage, then allowing his talented defensive line to free him up to make plays. He had standout performances in wins over Frederick, Century and Liberty, then racked up 18 tackles in a Class 2A West playoff game against North Hagerstown.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Tony Shermeyer
CenturyUnder Shermeyer's direction, Century improved from 1-9 in 2005 to 5-5 this season, including a 4-2 mark in Carroll County to tieWinters Mill for second place. It was a most dramatic turnaround for the Knights, who scored as many points (86) in back-to-back wins over rivals Liberty and South Carroll as they did in all of 2005. They also overcame a 2-4 start to win three of their last four, including a 13-7 win overWestminster, a team that had routed them, 58-0, a year ago. This was the second year as coach for Shermeyer, a native of Hanover, Pa., who briefly played linebacker at Kutztown University before spending five years as Century's defensive coordinator. Now, he's hoping to use the first non-losing season in school history as a springboard to future success.
