The Carver boys track and field team hadn't won much in its history. But Stephen Kimes quickly changed that, turning the Bears into a championship team.

In just his second indoor season, Kimes led Carver to an impressive sweep of the Baltimore City, regional and Class 1A state championships. These were the team's first city and state crowns, and what's believed to be the first regional title as well.

All-Metro pick Jawan Parker was solid in the sprints and relay, but Carver scored points all across the board.

"That's the kind of team that I like," Kimes said. "That's the kind of team I try to build. There's talent at Carver, believe it."

Kimes credited hurdles coach William Pridgen with helping the program go so far so fast. Kimes, who ran track at Marshall and came to Baltimore from West Virginia, is in his fourth year here.
