One minute, Nairn could be blasting a left-footed shot from 30 yards for a goal. The next, she could be finding a teammate up the field with a perfect pass. Combining incredible skills with an uncanny ability to read the game, Nairn was the area's most dangerous player this season.
Also the All-Metro Player of the Year, the senior midfielder finished the season with 27 goals and 13 assists, and the Cavaliers reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference semifinals. Over the course of a stellar four-year career, which included a conference championship in 2006, Nairn scored a team-record 70 goals and added 37 assists.
A two-time Parade All-American and under-17 U.S. national team poll player, Nairn will play at Penn State next fall.
Coach of the Year
Gary Lam, Severna Park
The Falcons (15-3) didn't have the standout scorer of years past or the dominating goalkeeper, but they did have a cohesive unit that came together to win the county championship and reach the Class 4A state semifinals. Lam, who is 101-16 in seven years, couldn't say enough about his senior class of eight players, all of whom were named team captains because each brought dedication and something different to the team.
The Falcons changed their formation this season, relying on three defenders with five midfielders to pressure the middle of the field, with two forwards running up front.
After three overtime wins to capture the East region, including a title-clinching victory over defending 4A state champion Leonardtown, the Falcons lost a tough 2-1 overtime game against C. Milton Wright in the state semifinals. Lam also praised the work of his assistant coaches - alumna Kerry York and Northeast graduate Karen Kotofski.
