Player of the Year
Simone Egwu
Arundel
Egwu, 6 feet 3, is a powerful centerpiece for the county's best team. The senior is an exceptional shooter, hitting 62.3 percent of her shots from the field and 83 percent from the line.
She averaged 16.1 points and 10.4 rebounds for the Anne Arundel County champs and Class 4A state runners-up. In the county final, a 78-51 win over Old Mill, she scored 17 points. The No. 3 Wildcats relied on her power inside, which was complemented with the finesse of 6-foot-4 teammate Sheronne Vails.
Egwu, who had 14 points and 18 rebounds in a win over Largo at the IAABO Tournament, already has scored 1,000 career points and is on pace to finish second on the school's all-time scoring chart.
Coach of the Year
Chuck Miller
Severn
In his eighth year with the No. 12 Admirals, Miller guided a young team to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference championship and a 23-3 season.
The Admirals started two sophomores and two juniors, but they swept all B Conference opponents and won games against Anne Arundel County foes Annapolis and Old Mill. Miller regularly plays county public schools teams, he said, because they toughen the Admirals for their conference action. He hasn't had a losing year since his first season at Severn, and he gives the players all the credit.
Miller, who is recovering from hip replacement surgery last month, has guided the Admirals to three B Conference crowns.
