Sixteen basketball players from the Baltimore area took part in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. After the first weekend of play, how many remain? Here's a look at how all 16 players fared.
Still alive
* C.J. Fair's top-seeded Syracuse squad got a scare from UNC-Asheville in the first round, but survived with a 72-65 win. Fair (City) contributed three points (1-for-7 from the field), three rebounds and two assists against the Bulldogs. In the Orange's 75-59 win over eighth-seeded Kansas State, Fair scored three points and grabbed three rebounds. Syracuse takes on fourth-seeded Wisconsin at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
* Isaiah Philmore's 10th-seeded Xavier squad beat seventh-seeded Notre Dame, 67-63, in the first round and topped No. 15 Lehigh, 70-58, in the second. Philmore, a John Carroll grad, is redshirting for the Musketeers after transferring from Towson. Xavier faces third-seeded Baylor at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
Two and out
* Henry Sims (Mount St. Joseph) recorded 15 points, five assists and four rebounds, and Greg Whittington (Oakland Mills) added seven points, four rebounds, two blocks and two assists in No. 3 Georgetown's 74-59 win over No. 14 Belmont in the first round. In the Hoyas' 66-63 loss to No. 10 North Carolina State in the second round, Sims had four points, three rebounds, two assists and one block, while Whittington contributed six points, four rebounds, one steal and one block.
One and done
* Kim English (Randallstown) was held to just two points on 1-for-7 shooting in second-seeded Missouri's stunning 86-84 loss to 15th-seeded Norfolk State in the first round. English, the Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 tournament after scoring 69 points in three games for the champion Tigers, also contributed five rebounds and one assist in Mizzou's loss.
"I just really liked our chances," English told the Kansas City Star. "We just didn't play the game we should have."
* Will Barton (Lake Clifton) scored 16 points (6-for-14 shooting) and had four rebounds in No. 8 Memphis' 61-54 loss to No. 9 St. Louis in the first round. Tigers guard Antonio Barton (Lake Clifton) was held scoreless in seven minutes of action.
"I feel like I let the entire city down," Will Barton told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I wish I could go back and change so many things."
* Eric Atkins (Mount St. Joseph) contributed seven points on 2-for-7 shooting, two assists and two rebounds in No. 7 Notre Dame's 67-63 loss to 10th-seeded Xavier. Atkins went to the free throw line for a one-and-one with 2.8 seconds remaining and the Irish trailing but two, but a lane violation by teammate Jack Cooley negated Atkins' make.
Varsity Highlights
"I was thinking that someone had stepped in early or something," Atkins told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It just hurt that [the free throw] didn't count at all."
* Roscoe Smith (Walbrook) scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in eighth-seeded Connecticut's 77-64 loss to ninth-seeded Iowa State. The sophomore forward also made the highlight shows for the wrong reason. Again.
* 15th-seeded Loyola's 78-59 loss to second-seeded Ohio State featured contributions from three Baltimore players. Dylon Cormier (Cardinal Gibbons) was the Greyhounds' second-leading scorer with 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting. R.J. Williams (St. Frances) scored two points and dished out five assists before fouling out. Jordan Latham (City) had two points, one rebound, one steal and one block in 15 minutes.
* Brendan Bald (Severna Park) had two points, one rebound, one steal and one block in No. 16 Vermont's 77-58 loss to No. 1 North Carolina.

* Brent Arrington (Lansdowne) scored seven points (3-for-6 from the field, 1-for-8 from the free throw line), had seven steals, four rebounds, two assists and one block before fouling out in Mississippi Valley State's 59-58 loss to Western Kentucky in a First Four matchup.
